Istanbul Modern - the only museum in Turkey with a separate gallery for photography - founded the largest institutional photography collection in Turkey. Initiated ten years ago, the number of works in this collection now amounts to 7,500 and continues to grow. With works ranging from the Ottoman era and the beginning of the Republic in the 1920s to the present, Istanbul Modern’s photography collection is recognized as one of the most important archives in Turkey. Presenting a contemporary selection from this archive, “Istanbul Modern Photography Collection – Landskrona” is the latest in a series of shows that Istanbul Modern has held in major cities of Europe and Middle East.

Featuring major examples of contemporary photography of the collection, this exhibition focuses on the idea of personal narrative, perception of the city and the play between reality and fiction. The artists employ photography not only as an act of simple surveillance, but also as a tool of interpreting daily life with sociopolitical and aesthetic references. By opening doors to different interpretations, their images use the power of ambiguity rather than submitting to a voice that dictates meaning.

The subjective approach of the artists in exhibition often creates a personal narrative that combines reality and fiction. Everyday life, memory, and the personal archives of artists are the subjects of experimental conceptual photographs that reflect each photographer’s subjective perception of space. Some achieve a conceptual force in their photographs without any intervention, while others employ various methods of manipulating a photograph. In the exhibition, by including computer generated images, books, photography-based videos and installations alongside analog photographs, photography becomes a mediated means of communication.

İstanbul Modern, Türkiye’de bağımsız bir fotoğraf galerisi bulunan tek müze olmanın yanı sıra, ülkenin en geniş kurumsal fotoğraf koleksiyonunu da bünyesinde bulunduruyor. On yıl önce kurulan ve fotoğraf sayısı 7500’e ulaşan koleksiyon büyümeye devam ediyor. Osmanlı döneminden ve Cumhuriyet’in kurulduğu 1920’lerden bugüne uzanan çalışmaları içeren İstanbul Modern Fotoğraf Koleksiyonu, bugün Türkiye’nin en önemli arşivlerinden biri olarak tanınıyor. Koleksiyondan güncel bir seçkinin sunulduğu “İstanbul Modern Sanat Müzesi Fotoğraf Koleksiyonu – Landskrona” ise İstanbul Modern’in Avrupa ve Orta Doğu’nun başlıca kentlerinde düzenlediği sergi dizisinin son halkasını oluşturuyor.

Koleksiyondaki güncel fotoğraf çalışmalarından örnekler içeren sergi; kişisel anlatı, kent algısı ve gerçeklik ile kurmaca arasındaki oyun kavramlarına odaklanıyor. Sergideki sanatçılar için fotoğraf gündelik hayatı gözlemlemenin ötesinde, sosyopolitik ve estetik göndermelerle çözümlemek için bir araç işlevi görüyor. Farklı yorumlara kapı aralayan fotoğraflar, anlamı dikte eden bir ses yerine, çok anlamlılıktan güç alıyor.

Sergideki sanatçılar, çoğu zaman öznelliği öne çıkaran yaklaşımlarıyla gerçeklikle kurmacayı buluşturan kişisel bir anlatı yaratıyor. Gündelik hayatları, bellekleri ve kişisel arşivleri; öznel uzam algılarını yansıtan deneysel ve kavramsal fotoğrafların konusu oluyor. Bazıları hiçbir müdahalede bulunmadıkları fotoğraflarla kavramsal bir güce ulaşırken, diğerleri çalışmalarında farklı müdahale tekniklerinden faydalanıyor.  Analog fotoğrafların yanı sıra,  kitap, bilgisayar üretimi görsel, fotoğraf temelli video ve yerleştirmelere de yer veren sergide, fotoğraf dolaylı bir aktarım aracına dönüşüyor.
