Is it possible to think about photography without its references and as an independent image? What does it show us? “Thing Seen” concentrates on works, which contemplate on the technical and conceptual limits of photography and consider it a testing ground. In this sense, the exhibition is a tribute to experimentality which combines performance and technique. Artworks, that get the idea and the production closer together and let imagination and original thinking a wider area to roam, find a place in the exhibition. Beyond the camera being used as a tool to convey ideas and facts, we see various attempts to enhance the phenomenon of photography. Without being overshadowed by dominant theories, the effort to put the process and the thought to their rightful place becomes apparent.

Parallel to the comeback of the material and technical variety in contemporary photography, this exhibition brings together approaches such as photographs without cameras, computer based images or analogue, digital or physical manipulations on photographs. The exhibition treats the image both as the starting point and destination by following the tracks of this testing ground in Turkey since 1970s.

Fotoğrafı referanslarından bağımsız bir görüntü olarak değerlendirmek mümkün müdür? Fotoğraf bize neyi gösterir? “Görülen Şeyler” fotoğrafın teknik ve kavramsal sınırları üzerine düşünen, onu bir deney alanı olarak ele alan çalışmalara odaklanıyor. Sergi kavramsallık, performans ve tekniği buluşturan deneyselliğe bir övgü niteliğinde. Fikir ve üretim arasındaki mesafeyi ortadan kaldıran, hayalgücü ve özgün düşünceye hareket alanı tanıyan çalışmalar sergide bir araya geliyor. Kameranın düşünceleri veya olayları aktaran bir araç olarak kullanılmasının ötesinde; fotoğraf olgusunu farklı yaklaşımlarla geliştirme girişimlerini görüyoruz. Hakim teorilerin gölgesinde kalmadan görüntüye, sürece ve düşünceye hakkını verme çabası öne çıkıyor.

 

Güncel fotoğraftaki malzeme ve teknik çeşitliliğin geri dönüşüne paralel olarak, kamerasız fotoğraflar, bilgisayar üretimi imgeler veya fotoğrafa analog, dijital, fiziksel müdahaleler gibi birçok farklı yaklaşım sergide bir araya geliyor. Sergi 1970’lerden itibaren, Türkiye’de bu deney alanının izini sürerek görüntünün kendisini hem çıkış hem de varış noktası olarak ele alıyor.
